Toby Adam
Director
What I do at Gaunt Francis Architects
I am a Director, with responsibility for design teams across the studio, as well as recruitment, IT, and quality management.
Who am I?
I am a highly experienced project architect and design team leader, with particular expertise in retirement living, care, and office fit out. I joined Gaunt Francis Architects in 2004 and was made a Director in 2011. Before joining GFA, I was an associate in a local Cardiff practice, and also worked for a large multi-disciplinary firm leading design teams for commercial clients such as Telereal and BT. I have considerable experience with community engagement and stakeholder consultation on both strategic land and retirement living projects.
I lead the digital transformation at GFA, implementing new document management tools and managing the shift to cloud-based systems to support hybrid working. I am also responsible for quality management, carbon reporting and HR.
I am an accredited RIBA Client Adviser, and have been a Design Review panellist for the Design Commission for Wales for the past 10 years.
Advice for prospective candidates
Try to make sure your portfolio has a mix of drawing types, and that you showcase your different presentation skills and any other artistic interests such as photography or sketching. Be prepared to discuss your projects with a clear narrative.
